Underground tilapia for a Swiss company?

Today, IntraFish informs about the plans of four teachers in Arizona to grow tilapia in underground tubes.
Some industrial minded people seem to think that with fish, they can just do what they like to. They would not dare to do simliar things with their pet, maybe. But are fish animals…? The four teachers (what are they teaching their pupils really?) bound for big scale tilapia underground farming out in the Arizona desert bet it will work. Maybe it will work for their account. But for the fish?
The four are aiming at harvesting 10 tons out of each buried tube containing 22'000 gallons of water. This means tilapia will have to cope with a high stocking density of 120 kg per cubic meter. Moreover, it means the fish will be set in an absolutely synthetic ambience depriving the species from almost every caracteristical component of its native habitat. Fish in such entirely unnatural living conditions will sure be much prone to disease.
Who believes that underground tube tilapia could be safer than tilapia from China? Who's that bloody Swiss company eager to buy all tilapia out of these tubes and make the factory become the world's biggest tilapia producer? Who will enjoy this meal?

Hugo is right. As long as there are huge and powerful corporations like Nestlé whose only interest is to increase profits, such people may be successful. Even if there is no need, the corporate thug might just create it through aggressive marketing... More awareness in the population is needed (keep informing, fair-fish) more green votes for governments that may one day oppose the irresponsible ways and atrocities of corporations.

I would like to comment on the blog that you posted in September of 2007.
The data that the Underground Fish Factory, LLC. is using to calculate how many fish per gallon is based off of research from several universities. Any fish taken from their natural environment is living in a synthetic environment. The fish that you put in your living room as pets are in tanks with synthetic boat crashes and lame treasure chests. Should we boycott and write negative blogs against major pet store chains? As long as the teachers are following PETA, USDA, and FDA guidelines on raising live stock, then there should be no negative press involved. The fish coming from China are being exposed to antibiotics that causes cancer to the individuals consuming the fish. Malachite green has been banned in most countries, but China does not regulate the market. Therefore, Malachite green is still being used as an antibiotic to protect fish from disease. The four teachers are planning on raising their fish organically and this is how their fish will be more safer then China's. The synthetic environment will also keep the fish safe from natural predators, airborne toxins, and airborne diseases that would normally kill the fish before they are consumed. Let's get one thing straight about Tilapia. This breed of fish has always been considered a nuisance on the environment. They over populate and they reek havoc on other fish around them. They were normally killed off by thousands to maintain habitats for other breeds of fish. They did not become popular until someone in the Middle East and Africa decided that the fish actually tasted great and could be consumed. Let's face it! Human beings are omnivores and we need to consume to survive. Plants are living things as well and we consume them by the millions. What does it mean to be green? The four teachers have a great idea that will not waste the environment and can help the starving. There has been no negotiations made between Nestle and the four individuals.
