According to a study publish by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the global catch could sustainably be enhanced to 122 million tons per year (actually 90 million tons).

Under stringent conditions: The «greening» of the global fisheries with a main focus on «a serious reduction in current excessive capacity». The authors of the study advise to concentrate on reducing the overcapacity of large-scale industrial fisheries which create less jobs and have negative impacts on livelihood while catching the biggest part.

Greening the fisheries would cost 8 billion US$ (5.5 milliard €) per year while triggering benefits to industry, consumers and the global economy totalling US$1.7 trillion (1.2 billion €) over the next forty years, the authors predict.

«The lives and livelihoods of over half a billion people, linked with the health of this industry, will depend on the tough but also transformational choices Governments make now and over the years to come,» Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director, said when presenting the report on May 17 in New York.
