In 2022, the United Nations lead a Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture in order to foster their eminent role in providing jobs and food for millions.

Generally fishing or fish farming activities are called small-scale or artisanal when they are based on relatively small production units with limited levels of technology, small investments, low input, and low output, usually in the hands of families or communities.

Artisanal activities are the major provider of products and jobs in the seafood business. Of the 60 million persons employed in fisheries worldwide, 90% work in the artisanal sector. Of the almost 70 million tons of the annual catch for human consumption, 54% are landed
by artisanal fisheries. In aquaculture, 70 to 80% of all employers are working in small-scale facilities. Almost 500 million persons on the globe depend at least partly on artisanal fisheries, and women account for 40% of all persons working in seafood.

These figures are taken from the Final Report on the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture in 2022 (IYAFA) organised by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The objectives of the many events were to empower artisanal fish workers in their role of providing welfare, resilient food systems and socioeconomic development, including gender equality and strengthening the role of youth to ensure future viability.

fair-fish has always been on the side of artisanal fisheries where it seems easier to introduce respectful behaviour towards animals and environment than in industrial fisheries, let alone the job and food safety advantages provided to the community by artisanal activities.
