On August 10, 2010 fair-fish had shown delight* at a paper published by the Pew Foundation and the Pew led coalition Ocean2012 in which reducing the fish consumption per capita is an issue.

Existing ecolabels are like the 'indulgences' that catholics could buy from the Church (the independant certification body?) centuries ago to get their consciences clean and keep sinning. What we advocate for is a deeper, Lutherian (?) type of revolution, where marketing such 'indulgences', and allowing (European) consumers to eat always more ecolabelled fish without feeling guilty, will become irrelevant.
Béatrice Gorez, Coalition for Fair Fisheries Arrangements CFFA
« Consumption patterns in Europe must change too, so that consumers eat less, but higher-quality fishery products provided through equitable commercial channels. A level playing field must also be established in the way non-tariff barriers, like sanitary and food standards, are applied to fishery products originating from EU fleets, and those from third-country fleets, particularly from small-scale fleets in the South.»
Of course the issue is of global concern, in a world of increasing population, growing demand, and finite and ever depleted and degraded resources. We also see the rise of China and India as global players in fisheries, with ever increasing consumption requirements for fish and fishery products. So its not just an EU problem to address, as FAO and others have been highlighting.
I appreciate your message about reducing fish consumption.
This page on our website shares some of your concerns:

I could go on FOREVER about how VERY LITTLE of the TAC and quota measures recently taken by the EU have yielded any result whatsoever.
Only pulling boats out of the water will make some sort of impact. Everything else, I'm afraid, is mostly cosmetic. And this is from a guy, mind you, who actually GOES to fishing ports and goes on fishing vessels. Unlike most conservationists, who lobby for legislation but don't actually leave their office but to attend meetings, I actually KNOW that said legislation has VERY LITTLE impact in the REAL WORLD.
Anyway, the last thing I want is to sound negative. I commend you for your efforts and I'm sure ALL our efforts combined should yield some sort of REAL result some time in the future.
